📈 The Reality of the Share Market in Islam

In Islam, the share market itself is not automatically Haram. Its ruling depends on which company you invest in and how you buy and sell the shares.

Allah says in the Qur'an:

“Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest (Riba).”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:275

Therefore, investing in a genuine, permissible business can be allowed in Islam.

✅ Which Shares Can Be Halal?

Shares of a company may be permissible when:

  • Its main business is Halal.
  • It does not primarily deal in alcohol, gambling, pornography, etc.
  • It does not depend on interest-based financial activities.
  • You are buying actual shares/ownership, rather than using a prohibited trading method.
  • You avoid fraud, manipulation and insider trading.

Examples of generally permissible sectors can include education, agriculture, manufacturing, technology, construction and ordinary retail, subject to the company's actual activities and financial structure.

❌ Which Shares Should Be Avoided?

Avoid companies whose main business involves:

  • Alcohol
  • Gambling and betting
  • Interest-based banking/finance
  • Pornography or explicit entertainment
  • Other clearly prohibited activities

💰 Is Profit From Shares Halal?

For example, you buy a permissible company's share for ₹100. Later its market price becomes ₹130, and you sell it for ₹130.

Your ₹30 profit can be permissible as a trading/investment gain, provided the company and the method of trading are Shariah-compliant.

This is different from Riba (interest).

⚠️ Important: Trading Method Matters

Even if a company's business is Halal, some trading methods can create Shariah problems, such as:

  • Interest-based margin trading
  • Short selling
  • Certain futures and options
  • Other derivative transactions

🕌 Simple Rule

Halal business + genuine share ownership + no interest-based financing + permissible trading method = investment may be permissible.

Haram business or a prohibited/interest-based trading method = avoid it.
